Therefore, we conclude that Cultural and Historical heritage is the inheritance of physical artifacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are acquired from the past generations. This heritage is important to be given significance in our lives not just because of their economic value but also because they also give us certain emotion that may cause us to feel that we are part of this country and that we belong to the traditions, belief and a way of life.
In our country we do have a lot of Cultural and Historical heritages and all we need to do is to know its existence. And we Filipino is more likely known to love our culture and are encouraged to develop and preserve the heritage, may it be physical or intangible heritage. Bohol has a number of very old churches way back from the time of the Spanish colonization. One of its Historical Heritage that is known among the Philippines and specifically in Bohol is the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception or commonly known as the Baclayon Church in Baclayon, Bohol.
Baclayon church is the best preserved Jesuit-built church in the country. The Baclayon church played a vital role in the history of Bohol since it was the first municipality ever to be established in the island by the Spaniards. There are many tourists said that the Baclayon church is very well preserved. But because of the magnitude 7.2 earthquake some of the part of the Baclayon church collapsed. Baclayon church has been under reconstruction to refer it.
And we also discover one law that well help us protect this heritage site. A law that aimed to provide protection, preservation, and promotion of the nation cultural heritage. Law help us to preserved what is deserving to preserved for, it creates necessary standard to assist what is worthy to protect for.
Baclayon church is indeed a great inheritance to be preserved knowing the fact that the efforts exerted in building the church was far from building with newer technology nowadays thus, Baclayon church was well preserved by the people in Bohol for it played and is currently playing a vital role in their community. First, in the history of Bohol since the spniards’ first municipality built in the island was this an It is the second biggest church built in stones, and the fact that preservation of this lasts quite a long range of tim. Second is in the pride of their community we all know that every people has things to boast about their hometown while in Bohol the Baclayon church is one of their pride since it is well positioned, well founded, and undeniably beautiful. Third is in their faith, throughout the years their devotion to God is getting stronger so as with their faith because they elt secure an or protected. And lastly, in the tourist atraction in their community so as to the developmentand maintenance of the church, since various of interesting relics inside the church are over centuries of preservation and others that caused tourists to visit even with an entrance fee of 50 pesos, well even if this money is not that big in a single person but if variety of them went daily then there will be enough fund to sustain the development and maintenance of the church. This church was mesmerizing, not until the year 2013 where magnitude 7.2 erthquake hits Bohol where variety of their cultural heritage have been damaged includin this very church.
They are in the process of rebuilding it, but the visitation is already accepted. Despite of the tragic happening the beauty of the church was still left to what it is even if some of the damaged part of the church and some of the old relics are replaced not with the original one. We cannot deny the discouragement we felt because of the replaced original materials and other beautiful and historical relics, but if we try to think critically the materials and the efforts that are original are irreplaceable, yet those are important but the most important thing now is the eagerness of the people in Bohol to preserve this very church and making the best of the least they can do to still show people not just the church but also their faith and perseverance, that damage which tragedy brought them, they still managed to get up and fixed what it damaged and they still rebuilt the image of their municipality.
During and after a day, a week of tragedy. Baclayon, Bohol was used to be the tourist stop until the magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit. The 18 century coral stone has lost some of its luster as one of the most popular heritage in the province of Bohol. There is no entry putted in front of the church to warn the people specially the motorists and those with vehicles to detouring one way away from the crumbled bell tower to be safe. Inside the church the visitors are required to use hard hats in case of aftershocks, a large crack can be seen in the inner entrance from the altar and visitors can only take a look to the areas that are dangerous. While the workers outside the church are busy taking away the debris and undertaking the work for restoration of the damaged heritage.
A media from GMA network discussed with the bishop for the rehabilitation and restoration of the damaged church then Gov. Edgar Chatto told that “for those that cannot be reconstructed, the we just remain as ruins and evidence of the destruction of the earthquake and they will just be promoted as tourist attraction”. Consultants from the National Museum, National Commission on Culture and the Arts and the National Historical Institute have been assisting Bohol in Rehabilitating. While the Spain also sent delegation to check on the cultural heritage churches that were built during their colonization, along with UNESCO, the Governor said, ” We have plans of putting transitional churches beside the ruins while waiting for the time that reconstructed churches will be restored or as the bishop would say Contemporary Churches.”
It took them 4 years to recover, and now the Baclayon Church is not yet fully rebuilt but is currently accepting visitor and showing its beauty to the tourists. We all know that tragedies and calamities are inevitable that’s why as long as we can help even if to the smallest things we can, we must. And we should not let ourselves to be a tourist in our own country. We must explore its corners and discover the beauty of it because we don’t know when will it be lost, the tragic event happened in Bohol whichbcauses damage to culturat heritage is just a reminder that these historical places won’t last forever that ‘s why as long as we can preserve it, even to the least we can do we must do our best. And as long as we can testify its beauty by ourselves we must not waste chances because there is nothing so real than the reality. We must visit Bohol, specially the Baclayon church, if you want to see centennial relics and vividly see the passion in building the church that can be seen in the materials used in it.
